English-language book sales in Israel are on the rise, with the increase totaling anywhere from 5 to 20 percent, according to local booksellers. Chains like Steimatzky and Tzomet Books are predicting an ongoing upswing, thanks to best-sellers like the Harry Potter series, which have taught many native Israelis to appreciate books in their original language.

"English book sales only continue to grow and though we obviously see many Anglos, there are also a lot of young Israelis who want to improve their English," says Lior Taranto, director of English-language book imports at Tzomet Books. The nationwide chain began including English sections in all of its stores just two years ago.

"With the Internet, young children are improving their English, and they often want to read a book in the original. We're living in a global village more than ever before," notes Tami Reich, one of the owners of Tamir books. Its seven branches in the Jerusalem area have seen a 10 percent increase in English-language book sales during recent years.
