I agree with everything you had to say.
I am retired and enjoy auditing university courses through Continuing
Education.
I do buy the texts and do the required reading and participate in classroom
discussion, in fact more than most undergraduates. I have never feared
offering my opinion in front of a class.
I do not do the essays or write the exams however.
About a year ago I took my first (and so far, only) Communications course.
The theory was very interesting. The prof, Rick 'somebody' (I forget his
name although he was very good) asked me to be on one team of presenters.
Everyone was assigned to a team to talk on a given topic, one team per
lecture. We were assigned Organizational Communication. At first I
protested but then I agreed with my co-presenters that I would just serve as
an introducer to their topics. I made an Acrobat presentation since I
didn't have Powerpoint on my computer. In fact, when projecting Acrobat as
'full screen' it is as good as Powerpoint except for the lack of distracting
animations.
I decided to use Rocky Picture Horror Show as part of my presentation. My
presentation was very tongue-in-cheek. I have put it back up on my Web site.
My intro was 'interrupted' by each of my co-presenters in turn as they
discussed their portion of the topic.
After my presentation, several of the others in succeeding lectures took on
a more humorous or light-hearted tone, thank goodness. My co-presenters
presented their material completely but in a very dry manner as did most
that preceded my presentation. I had nothing to lose since I was not getting
marked and as long as I did not negatively impact on my co-presenters, I
thought all was fair game.
They were a little worried about the comment on the flower pot in the first
'slide'.
You might get a kick out of it. Take a look if you want. The first 'slide'
was done with Photoshop. You might guess that I am a Chemical Engineer by
profession (Le Chatelier), although I learned about Le Chatelier in high
school chemistry.
