You may want to cut out interesting articles with their questions and make 
reading cards out of them. Students can do them as extra work or to make up 
work they haven't done. I know of one school that has a huge file of such work, 
and reading one article + answering the questions allows students to erase one 
minus from the teacher's gradebook. Just an idea...
