With all due respect to Maxine's letter, the level of English has not improved.
I've been involved with a large number of
teachers over the past two years.
The whole program is vague. The fact that very many teachers are frustrated
and lost bears witness to this.
I know that there are some teachers, like yourself, who cope and teach well.
However, you certainly do NOT represent the majority of teachers in the
field.
Whatever you say, teachers need more specific guidelines and a more
consistent policy that doesn't keep on changing.
I've been at high level meetings and the fact of teacher frustration and
confusion has been high up on the agenda. Why are so many teachers
confused? They aren't all stupid!
I disagree completely about projects and performance based teaching. First
the basics have to taught and internalised. I enjoy doing projects with
students who are capable of benefitting from them.
It certainly looks good that Israeli English students are doing projects.
How many students do their projects seriously? Those who are serious
students and are capable of doing them.
I have some friends who teach privately. They have certainly benefitted
from the current situation.
I am very worried about my future as an English teacher and I want to make
sure that my grandchildren will be taught properly in the future (they
haven't yet been born!)
Even though you think I'm negative, my aim is to improve the situation for
everyone's benefit.
Chag sameach,
Nina
