Officials set meeting on special English classes
Haaretz - August 24, 2007

Children whose first language is English could be sitting in a class with students who are still learning their ABCs in the new school year. Despite its promises, the Education Ministry still has not come up with a comprehensive solution for native English speakers in the country's school system.

In May the ministry announced that it would discontinue the program allowing native English speaking children to be taken out of their regular classes to study in smaller enrichment groups. In the wake of the flood of protest letters from parents and immigrant organizations ministry officials vowed to "formulate a solution that will properly address this population." With the school year just days away, parents and teachers are still waiting.

"I have 80 parents calling me every day to ask what's happening, but I have nothing to tell them," said Janet Nussbaum, the head of a parents' committee in Kiryat Ono. "The whole thing is very frustrating and we're just twiddling our thumbs in the meantime."
