New school to help immigrant teens with matriculation
Haaretz
Come September, Modi'in, Beit Shemesh and Ra'anana will each receive a new
learning center dedicated to helping Anglo immigrant teenagers prepare for
the high school bagrut (matriculation) final exam. The three centers will
belong to a newly launched school which will be Israel's first Anglo bagrut
school.
The Ben Aharon-Cutler School will offer evening and afternoon courses during
the winter and spring semesters as a supplement to the materials students
learn in the Israeli education system, Orna Ben Aharon, who will serve as
the school's dean, told Anglo File yesterday.
"As recent Education Ministry surveys show, many Anglo teenagers end up
dropping out of the Israeli school system altogether, and that's what we're
here to prevent," says Ben Aharon, an Israeli teacher who lived in Toronto
for many years before returning two years ago with her two Canadian-born
children.
The school is part of Lamdeni, a private initiative was launched six years
ago which aims to assist North American immigrants cope with the Israeli
education system. Lamdeni offers programs that assist both parents and their
children.
