New lobby champions intelligible official English
Haaretz - November 17, 2006

Ever pressed a button for telephone services in English and found that the person who eventually answers only speaks Hebrew? Read an Israeli government notice in English that barely makes sense? Felt frustrated when the nation's only daily television news in English has been shortened or rescheduled yet again?

A new lobby group pledges to do something about these and other complaints voiced by irked native English-speakers in Israel.

"We want to make more information available in English to those who need it," says Hertzel Katz, who initiated the formation of the Council of English Speaking Organizations in Israel (CESOI) several weeks ago.

The trigger, he says, was a large advertisement in the English press during the war last summer with instructions from the Home Front Command. "It just didn't make sense," says Katz, who is also chairman of ESRA (English Speaking Residents Association). "It wasn't intelligible. Parts of it lacked clarity and accuracy. It got people talking about this issue again."
