Must the students use the NEW Oxford Student's dictionary for the new
Bagrut? While writing a textbook for Modules E,F and G - I used the New
dictionary - and was very surprised to find that there were quite a lot
of differences between the NEW and older dictionary:
1. some words had been omitted { I have no idea as to the reasoning behind
these omissions}
2. some words were give less definitions and in a few cases entirely
different definitions
Another problem is the financial aspect. Many students have complained
and asked why they should buy a "new" dictionary - since they have
already bought a second hand "old" dictionary.
Will the writers of the English Bagrut be using the "new" or "old"
Oxford student's dictionary? <SNIP>
Well, Jannette, I'd certainly love to receive an answer to that question, as
well. All I can say is that when I was writing my books and requested
permission from Lonnie Kahn and Kernerman Publishing to include some of their
dictionary entries in them, I was emphatically told that only the new
dictionary could be used. If that's the case, I assume that it would be the
same for the Bagrut, although I would like to hope that those in charge show
some understanding and try to write exams which are appropriate for both
dictionaries at least for the next two or three years, until the old
dictionaries are more or less "phased out."
BTW, adding to your comments about the differences between the old and new
dictionaries, I must also point out that there are also entirely new entries in
the new dictionary, especially regarding technology and so forth.
All the best,
Rivka
