This is even true of native speakers. I've come across plenty of idioms
that I didn't understand, either because they were from "before my time" or
because they were British or southern (US), etc. I've even come across
words that I didn't know how to pronounce. I don't think that non-native
speakers not always understanding written English or not being able to read
a word out loud is that big of a problem -- non-native speakers can use the
same sources that we native speakers use to figure out what something means
or how to pronounce something. I see more of a problem with THINKING that
you understand something when you don't because of word play or ironic use
of language.
