Judy, we appear to be looking at two different documents, regarding the
Ministry guidelines.
According to the Ministry site, the following appears in the new curriculum:
Domain of Appreciation of Literature and Culture, and Language
- Appreciation of Literature and Culture - Levels of Progression
Proficiency Level
- Pupils gain cultural, historical and social insight from reading unadapted
literary texts.
- Pupils develop critical perspectives toward different cultural values and
norms.
First of all, I don't see anything here limiting this only to cultures
OUTSIDE of Israel.
Secondly, while it is definitely worthy to have our students gain cultural,
historical and social insight into cultures in other countries, why should
we miss an excellent opportunity of having them gain such social insight
into a culture foreign to most of them in their own country, a relatively
short distance from where they live?
What are we afraid of?
