[etni] Meitzav cont'd

Shavua tov.

It's a shame we can't simply upload the comments of teachers around the
country who did the CAT course last year. The ministry has been given our
feedback on the Meitzav, most of it, very critical. In our course, it was
proven that most textbooks have all of the skills of the Meitzav built in
(reading and listening comprehension and writing). That's the good news.
Aside from that, not much good can be said about the Meitzav.

1. There's nothing like the telephone interview to frustrate a teacher. It
basically tries to generalize and minimize every thing you do. "How often
do you get to the computer room?" Um, would that be the one with 9
computers, 3 of which may work at the same time, and 35 students to stick in
the room?

2. There's nothing like a Meitzav test to destroy years of work building up
the confidence of a weak student who has finally mastered the art of reading
a short sentence. They come out of the tests sqashed like bugs - completely
demoralized. Try getting them back into the classroom the next day.

3. There's nothing like getting called into the principal's office to
explain the results and comments of 7th and 8th graders in their
questionnaire such as,"Do you feel you get enough homework?" "No, really,
we're dying for more. Please let us memorize "Hamlet" by Wednesday." (Note:
I was once in a classroom when this questionnaire was administered to 7th
graders in the October or November, when they were still being eased into a
new school).

And let's not forget, the students know the Meitzav results don't go into
their report cards (although there are creative ways to get grades out of
it) and they can sabotage the results easily, skewing the results, and
sullying their school's and teacher's reputations. These are pre-teens and
teens - the age of rebellion. Don't arm them with dangerous weapons.

4. No dictionaries - NO COMMENT!

Lucille's assessment of the Meitzav was correct. "These SEVEN tasks,
regardless of the level and length of the listening and reading texts, are
more than 4-Point students do in the Bagrut - Module D."

May is a few months away. A reality check is needed - urgently.
