**** ETNI on the web http://www.etni.org.il http://www.etni.org **** Livnat set to unveil revolutionary education policy Haaretz - December 18, 2003 While Israel's political arena braces for Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's political address Thursday at the Herzliya Conference, officials in the Education, Culture and Sport Ministry are anticipating what they describe as a "drama" of their own: a speech to be given at the conference by Education Minister Limor Livnat that is expected to relate to a revolutionary education policy. The education minister will deliver her address while serving as chair at a forum entitled "Changes in the education system." As part of the reforms, Livnat plans to institute a five-day school week, oversee the layoff of thousands of teachers and expand the jobs of teachers who remain within the system. Livnat and her aides are aware that these changes are liable to spark bitter confrontations with the nation's two teacher associations, and could include prolonged school strikes. As a result, the timing of the plan's unveiling - in the middle of the school year - could be less than ideal. Nonetheless, Livnat is resolved to go full steam ahead with her education reform program; in doing so, she could implement the most comprehensive reforms ever instituted in the school system.
