**** ETNI on the web http://www.etni.org.il http://www.etni.org ****
We, teachers on the ETNI list, of all people, should realize that is IS
possible to return lit. to the bagrut WHILE ALLOWING A LARGE VARIETY.
Why can't pupils do part of their test through the Internet with a variety of
MODULES pupils can choose and combine to get to the required number of literary
pieces?
Let's explore this idea for a second.
First of all, safety measures. Obviously there must be a set date and time for
the exam, otherwise pupils will be able to convey questions asked on a
particular story to the next pupil. Supervision must be present to prevent
discussing the answers or logging in under somebody elses name. ID numbers and
passwords can be handed out if necessary.
Technical problems could be manifold. Not all schools have enough computers and
Internet access for all pupils. Not all networks allow large groups of students
to log in all at the same time. Still, these problems could be solved. Students
might be required to come to a few certain central testing points throughout
the country for this part, much the same way as theory is tested for drivers'
licence. Technical staff would be available on the spot to solve any problems.
The advantages are obvious. The Ministry could offer a wide range of literature
choices and not all schools would have to do the same program. Come to think of
it, not all students in the same class have to do the same program either, very
much in cue with the Modules. They might even be able to do the test in parts,
along the lines of the Tsfira model.
A disadvantage for the Ministry would obviously be that they'd have to prepare
a large amount of questionnaires online, but these questions could be made into
one huge question bank and could, though the years, be recycled. Teachers
should even get a copy of the (many) possible questions a student might be
required to answer for each literary piece. These could be downloaded from the
Internet and would help overcome the problem that different teachers put
different emphasis when teaching literature. They then become the lessonplans
for the teachers.
It should be completely clear that the best way to compile so many questions on
such a variety of literary pieces is to ASK US TEACHERS, to help create them.
That would be change, if WE could get involved in the kind of questions
students are asked on their final test.
I am game and available if the Ministry needs me. What about you?
