I believe that it was my rant about the low level of L1 teaching here, which
retards/disables your average Israeli student in EFL learning. I offered to
help train the jh Hebrew teachers in our 7-12 school. In the end, it was made
clear that my complaints were among the reasons I didn't "fit in." Ironically,
they spent a lot of money bringing in experts, to give us "hishtalmuyot," who
said what I had been saying. But they didn't have my heavy American accent.
And of course there was no follow up, no serious changes in curriculum. I also
begged for the opportunity to teach the teachers how to make up rubrics, so
that the students would understand on what basis they'd be graded. I believe
that it teaches responsibilty, but the teachers didn't want to change their
methods.
So, our Israeli students are just doing worse and worse, and they grow up and a
small percentage become teachers who are even less capable of training the next
generation.
And about cursive writing. The Hickey Method, generally used to teach English
to various MLD kids includes a "connected" writing method, a very easy to learn
cursive writing.
