Dear friends SHALOM
This is an update on my previous message concerning AGUDAT KORCZAK. I have
received a few emails asking for more details.
In his toughest and most challenging period in life - the Ghetto Years -
Korczak continued to care for his children, feeding them, clothing them and
yes educating them (believe it or not, in a heterogeneous set-up). I often
ask myself HOW? What was the source of his energy? Who were the people who
were still willing to help support the orphanage after two long years of
degradation in the Ghetto. All knew that Korczak's only interest was a
better upbringing for his children and as difficult as it was - gave.
What is happening to the Korczak association today cannot and must not be
compared to those horrific years. Over twenty countries in the world have
recognized the educational value of Korczak's legacy and these associations
are supported by their Ministry of Education. Israel is the only country
where the association has taken upon itself to widely spread Korczak's
ideas, a bridge to a better world. Today there are two graduates of
Korczak's orphanage who still continue to visit schools, give talks and
answer questions. They are LIVING history. Over the years their input has
been a non-profitable contribution. All the professional speakers who
without hesitation visit schools to talk about Korczak's Educational
Philosophy, do so as a contribution to the man, his legacy and because we
believe that his values are more essential today than ever before. With
tears in my heart I ask myself if the time has come to become apathetic or
like Korczak continue the battle to the end, till I cannot any more.
How can you help. The English teaching community has always led the way in
setting high standards in education. And once again - this is what needs to
be done. Korczak should be a living thought in every educator's heart.
Become a member, learn more about the man and his philosophy from the
booklets that will be sent to you. Member schools can call upon the
association for guest lectures including visits from the graduates I have
already mentioned.
I have a vast collection of Korczak data in English that I have worked years
to put together and am willing to share all of it with anyone interested. I
will visit schools and give talks about Korczak in English as an English
speaking guest speaker as enrichment for your pupils, or in Hebrew for
groups of pupils and/or teachers (for member-schools of the association).
This is my contribution and I will work ten times as hard knowing that I am
doing my share.
The following decision has been made at the association.
Purchase of books (a MUST for any library and home) Each book costs between
40 - 80 shekel. A school or person who wishes to purchase the entire
package will receive it for 350 shekel (instead of 840 shekel - 350). This
price does not include postage. Schools can collect the package from the
office in Tel Aviv or come to an arrangement with the office.
100 shekel for annual membership
250 shekel annual school membership
350 shekel for the Korczak collection of books (All in Hebrew)
payable to:

I have received a few promising calls from individuals through ETNI and have
just been informed that Eric Cohen Books is also contributing, thank you
Eric.
I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a good and restful vacation
and look forward to meeting you at ETAI.
Yours as always,
Avi
