It's a small, small world in Israeli classrooms
Haaretz - February 23, 2005
Geography teachers and geographers fear the subject will be hurt by
plans to merge it with Land of Israel studies. The ministry's social
science curriculum director Hana Adan told the geography professional
committee about the plan at a meeting at the Education Ministry last
week. "The decision to merge an expansive science like geography with
an eclectic studies program like Land of Israel studies is political,"
according to Prof. Haim Kutiel of the University of Haifa geography
department, a member of the committee.
"Already 40 percent of the subject is dedicated to Israeli geography,"
says Tzippi Klein, who runs the geography program at the Hebrew Reali
School in Haifa. "We can't let students complete school and not know
anything about the world around them."
