Subject: If you're teaching Summit - you may be interested in this article
Just last week, I came across an article which is, in my opinion,
is perfect as additional reading for students using Summit. It's about
a picture which was miscaptioned by AP as showing a Palestinian
being beaten up by two Israeli soldiers, and which then appeared
on the front page of the NYT with that caption. In reality, it was a
picture of an American yeshiva student learning here in Israel, who
was beaten up by an Arab mob and was saved by two Israeli
soldiers. Now, five years later, the subject of the picture has made
aliyah, and the article tells the story of how the picture came to be
and what the results are. Very interesting, and it really reinforces the
message of "don't believe everything you hear, see, and read."
If you're interested, I'd be happy to send you a copy along with a
page of questions I wrote. I gave it to my students as an unseen,
but it could also be done together with the teacher, of course.
Warning: In the article, there is one - and only one - term which
is quite political in nature. I actually took advantage of that to ask
a question about the author's political leanings (again reinforcing
the message of carefully scrutinizing everything you read), but
you have to decide whether you want to bring that into class or not.
If you do, please drop me a line with your full snail-mail address,
and I'll try to get it out to you right away.
All the best,
Rivka
