As in the past, this year too the nation's teachers went in to their schools
early to prepare for the new academic year. Summer vacation is over, thank
God, and everyone, or nearly everyone, breathes a sigh of relief ahead of
the return to the classroom - even if only for a short time, before everyone
goes back on vacation again during the upcoming holiday season.
The teachers at the Chaim Herzog High School in Kfar Sava got together this
week for what is known in the education establishment as "preparation days."
Many of them looked tense and gloomy. Some difficult things have been
happening to the teachers over the last few years. They bear what is perhaps
the loftiest of burdens - educating the next generation - and don't seem
happy about it. Almost all of them have felt the quiver of excitement that
precedes the beginning of the school year, when they face their new
students, but the pride has disappeared and the feeling of carrying out a
mission has dissipated.
Had it been up to the teachers, they would have waged battle - even a
violent one - to shake up the leaders and citizens of the state so that
everyone would know that those responsible for the education of our children
are now fighting for their personal survival and for the continued existence
of the teaching profession.
A veteran teacher, 30 years in the field, said fervently that she is lucky
her children are no longer in school. Another teacher wondered at the
silence of the state in light of the terribly desperate situation of the
educators of the next generation. How can it be, she asked, that the
government is slashing education funding as though it were cutting out
luxuries - and everyone keeps silent ...
