Dear You and everyone else,
I haven't responded to anything in ages, somehow it all the Bagrut, NBA,
etc.fade in importance when we start to realize that so many of us see
ourselves as educators, dedicated to the profession and around us the
reality is quite different.

Years ago, when I was still an "emergent teacher", the principal of our
school, a man who I admired greatly, made the comment that schools were
always the last bastion of the value system of society. It seems to me,
that more and more teachers I meet have had too many "incidents", and it
isn't really a matter of the type of school we teach at.

There is no simple remedy, nor is there anything (chocolate?) to make us
feel better when we are surrounded in our daily lives by so much corruption
and lack of respect for anything, be it of one another or ourselves. It was
bound to rub off at some point on the younger citizens. Some would say we
are too sensitive, however in my own school, a teacher was abused (not
verbally or physically) and the English staff was not happy with the "too
soft" reaction of the "management". We sent a letter and promptly further
measures WERE taken. We do have a say.

Does it make us feel better? Not really, just continually concerned. No
answers.
Terry Benor

Dear Etniers,

today I was a victim of both verbal and physical violence perpetrated by a
student (and I don't even teach him). As violence goes, it wasn't "serious",
but the entire incident was both upsetting and frightening. The incident is
being handled by the school and the police.

I'm turning to you, my colleagues, for some advice and moral support. I am
going to school tomorrow (high school) because I have to be there for a
meeting about this thing. But I really don't want to go back. At all - ever.
I'm sure this is natural and will probably pass, - but what do I do till
then?

I'm worried about my safety and even the "safety" of my car.

Please respond to this special email, as I don't want my name or school
openly on the list.

Thank you
