*Miho Kataoka Erlich*
*"Design, the Way of Life â Ceramic Tea Wares (Chato) and Tea Ceremony
(Chado)" *
*Chanoyu, the synthesis of philosophies and art which cultivated the way of
serving tea in Japan, emerged in the 16th century. Ceramics in the tea
ceremony represent only one type of material, but the form, design and the
color of tea bowls are appealing and always were an object of
appreciation. In this lecture, Miho introduces the various Japanese tea
bowls with their unique development and history. She will also discuss
the process and design in her own pottery. *
*Miho Kataoka, a ceramic artist and a dancer, was brought up in Kyoto,
Japan. She earned a B.A. in ceramic art in Kyoto City University of Art in
1994. At this time, she also started learning Tea Ceremony. She received
an M.A. in Religious Study from Tel Aviv University in 2009. Today, she
creates Japanese style pottery for daily use as well as for The Tea
Ceremony in her Rehovot. *
