Subject: Dictionaries
Most students don't open a dictionary unless it is on a test which
means their dictionary skill are poor as it is. Therefore, for most of
them the use of a dictionary is hardly helpful unless it is for
finding meaning. I am sure that many of you have encountered strange
questions regarding the use of dictionary because the skills are so
poor and sometimes even their Hebrew is so poor that it prevents them
from understanding meaning even when it is in Hebrew.
Learning a language must encourage seeking the help of a dictionary.
Of course for vocabulary quizes, a dictionary is not necessary but I
think it is definitely ok when it concerns unseens, literature and
even grammar. If a student is able to understand how to imitate a
certain grammatical form by using the example, I believe it is proof
that the teacher has done a ggod job. Unfortunately, in most cases the
dictionary doesn't help as they just aren't proficient enough or
simply don't know how much a dictionary can help.
