Dear Jennie .... and ETNI friends,
Your message about bullying and your son stays with me and also saddens me.
It brings to a head, once again, the faulty system we have here that turns
our school schools into beds of violence and this shows itself in various
ways. We've been through the cycle here on ETNI many times.

Jennifer's posting reinforces the very serious problem at hand.

Yes, I also grew up in a different system, like the one you described. We
seem to import the latest fashions in education from the US but seem to
ignore some of the good basics. We lack the frameworks available in many US
schools for children with special needs and problems, frameworks that could
prevent and/or deal more effectively with bullying and other unacceptable
behavior.

I've worked in many schools and continue to do so. Some are better and some
are worse. In all of them, I've encountered violence, violence between
pupils, violence towards teachers, vandalism, etc. I have also been a victim
of violence more than once. It took me a long while to work through it.

You're correct, in my opinion, in your analysis. I feel for you and your
child and hope he will see better days at school.

My children have grown and are out of the system but if I had it to do
again, I think I'd go for home-schooling, weighing the advantages and
disadvantages. I'm privy to a number of local families home-schooling their
children and it's impressive; the kids are blossoming. Maybe my
granddaughter?! But that's another kettle of fish.

Yours,
Laurie
