[etni] Fw: violence ...again

Subject: violence ...again

Hi All,

On a less than musical note this time, I find myself preoccupied today with
the issue of violence in schools; Irgun Hamorim called a 1 hour protest
strike this morning after a Kiryat Gat principal was attacked by a parent
yesterday, the 4th reported incident this month.

Somehow, this latest "news item" has acted as a trigger to my memory of past
violent events I've personally experienced in my lengthy teaching career and
some other violent acts my friends and colleagues have told me about. It
obviously doesn't affect only English teachers, but we have been involved in
far too many acts of violence as I shake up my ETNI memory.

Shlomit Amichai this morning explained in an interview that the Ministry
takes the matter seriously;I don't doubt her but obviously, more needs to be
done. Maybe the English teachers could come up with some suggestions for the
Ministry. I'm thinking right now of a "Working Against Violence Week" in
which ALL teachers of all subjects are involved. Each teacher works the
subject into the week's lessons. I'm sure even the math teachers could do
something with the statistics! And of course, it must involve the parents.

Am I fighting windmills or does this make sense?

Laurie
