Subject: streaming vs heterogeneous classes
Hi All,
As there's no way to add comments to the polls now, I'd like to write a few
words on the above subject here.
First of all, many high schools, such as mine, include 9th grade. This is
still "jr." high level. We have streaming or "hakbatzot".
Second of all, there are also many schools, some of which I know "up front",
that do not have streaming, even in high school. In other words, the classes
on one grade level may be considered the "Biology" class or "other" name but
the division of pupils into these higher or lower level classes is not based
on English. The result is that in such classes, you often have non-readers,
3, 4 and 5 pointers all "learning" English together. This leads to very
frustrated teachers and pupils and limited learning.
I understand, in part, the philosophy for heterogeneous groups but my
experience and field work prove otherwsie.
Laurie
