Subject: songs in the EFL classroom
Hi All,
I can't not get into this discussion on the use of songs in the EFL
classroom. I've been singing with my pupils since I started teaching well
over 30 years ago. It's made all the difference to me and many of my pupils.
I agree 100% with Mitzi's comments and won't repeat her words here. Let me
just share with you a "song story".
Back in my 20's... I lived and taught in Kiryat Malachi. I was an
elementary school teacher then. I remember 1 particular "challenging" 6th
grader who literally climbed the walls and jumped in and out the windows.
Quite a few years later I was visiting in town and as I was walking through
the shopping center a young soldier approached me making believe he was
playing the guitar and singing aloud "Kumbaya". You've guessed right. It was
"him"! Every word of the song was crystal clear and so was his use of
Present Progressive when he told me he was studying English after army
hours. I'll never forget that chance meeting.
So, yes, do sing songs with your pupils. If you teach them right, the
lyrics will not be gibberish. A song singing in one's heart is, in my
opinion, often worth more than a pile of exercises. (I'm not knocking
grammatical exercises; I use them too.)
