Subject: sanctions against in service training
In response to Michele Ben's posting.
I don't think that the directive not to attend the in-service training is
wrong headed. Quite the contrary.
First, it's a sanction which sends a clear message - no more changes with
vague promises about remuneration. We made that mistake 6 years ago when we
began to implement the NBA, including the projects, for no extra pay. We
have to understand that the struggle must be before implementation, not
afterwards. Otherwise, it's like negotiating the cost of a house after
you've already signed the contract stipulating that you agree to buy.
Furthermore, other teachers are being paid for making a change in their
curriculum with the understanding that changes require in service training
and extra prep hours. Why should we be entitled to less?
Lastly, it is a sanction that carries minimal (if any) "damage" to the
students.
As to the g'mul we are entitled to - we can get these g'mulim for any
hishtalmut - not just this particular one. At any rate, the increase for one
56 hour course is not very significant.
