Subject: response to "my community and I"

Hello! Someone mentioned an idea for a lesson regarding ourselves within our
community.
We are all aware of the large numbers of poor families throughout our
country. Our Ulpana has for several years worked hand in hand with local
social workers from Sedot Negev. We have a room set aside at school where we
stock collected food (canned or packaged,) and teachers must also bring
something as well weekly (or pay by check in advance for the purchase of
foodstuffs.) I know this has absolutely nothing to do with English. But,
lets face it: we Eng. teachers do so much more than many of our colleagues,
why not bring up the idea at your staff meetings? It is a fantastic way to
promote communal responsibility. Our h.s. pupils get loads of satisfaction
collecting and making up the parcels. There is such a need to instill
communal responsibility in our youth. In ALL our schools (except perhaps a
few elite ones, none of which are in MY neck of the woods :) there are
pupils who lack funds for basic things like textbooks, not to mention good
nourishing food (rather than noodles; bread with chocolate spread; etc.) I
don't want to get political, but I don't see ANY government solving the
poverty issue in the near future; a change will probably have to come from
the "bottom up," as we see with so many wonderful volunteer organizations
such as Yad Eliezer and Meir Panim rather than gov't intervention.
When I see some of my wealthier pupils with mp3 ; etc. sitting next to a
pupil who I know we teachers secretly purchase books for, it breaks my
heart. The old song "Ot v'ani n'shane et haolam," is as appropriate today as
when it first recorded. Shana tova to all!
