In my humble opinion book reports or book tasks serve three very useful purposes: they encourage students to read a book for content and meaning relevant to their lives; it allows us (teachers) to monitor and grade what are students are reading and thirdly, it motivates a student to actually take out an English book and read it. 

Reading is for the mind what exercise is for the body.
