I used this poem a number of years back after finishing the story "The
Enemy". I have the
poem with a glossary and a simple work page asking for a response. It is a
Word version ready to use. You can find it directly at

or the last link on

It seems too difficult - but I discovered that is not.
Jack Pillemer

The man he killed
by Thomas Hardy

"Had he and I but met
By some old ancient inn,
We should have sat us down to wet
Right many a nipperkin

"But ranged as infantry,
And staring face to face,
I shot at him as he at me,
And killed him in his place.

"I shot him dead because--
Because he was my foe,
Just so: my foe of course he was;
That's clear enough; although

"He thought he'd 'list, perhaps,
Off-hand like--just as I--
Was out of work--had sold his traps--
No other reason why.

"Yes; quaint6 and curious war is!
You shoot a fellow down
You'd treat8 if met where any bar is,
Or help to half-a-crown."

I was asked to let the list know about recommendations/ideas concerning The Enemy.. so here are some more wonderful additions to what I've already sent.

Why don't you show them "The Bridge of the River Kwai"? It shows (
Hollywood style) how the Japanese usually treated their POWs?
Also you can read with the class "Beware of Dog" by Roald Dahl, which
is another story about a POW who has also been injured. Finally I often
teach the other side of the story ie how the Americans treated the Japanese
during WW2 using a excerpt from "Snow Falling on Cedars" by David Guterson
and the poem " In Response to Executive Order 9066" by Dwight Okita - both
pieces can be found in Voices (ECB).
