The following idea does take time but if you have a class that you
have had a very good relationship with, it is well worth the effort.
I have put together booklets as a farewell present to the class.
Sometimes these booklets contain a sampling of their work, each
pupil choosing the piece of work s/he is proudest of.
I always include a dedication letter from me, a favorite poem of
mine and sometimes a piece of my own writing.
Other booklets that I have put together are a collection of various
essays, jokes, funny quotes, etc. It's mostly amusing stuff with
a sprinkling of more serious pieces.
There was one time I wrote a "Last Will and Testament" (an idea
taken from my high school yearbook) for a class I had taught for
two years, knew well, and really loved teaching.
Though, as I say, it involves time and effort, it is REALLY worth it.
You get an enormous sense of satisfaction, The kids are touched by
it and I sometimes have pupils coming to visit years later (well,
they don't come to visit just to tell me about the booklet....) who
tell me they still pick up the booklet every once and a while
and get a good laugh from something that's written there.
