Dear Naomi et al,

Your English room sounds lovely! I have no suggestions for the "hanging" question, but regarding books, first of all, why are they in the English room, rather than in the library? We used to have it in the English room, but came to the conclusion that we are NOT librarians, and we have enough (MORE than enough) work to do without taking on the role of librarians. (It was a real battle, believe me, but we got the principal involved and convinced everybody that it is much more cost effective, the books we purchase last longer.) We moved all of our reading books into the library - they process them, and when a learner forgets to return the book, they send out reminders, and collect fees when books are lost or damaged. In addition, there is something about the atmosphere of taking a book out of a library; browsing in a library, that I feel was missing when it was in the English
room. A sort of library-awe (maybe it's just me ;)

In the library, the books are coded according to colors, and sub-coded according to the title (rather than author - not sure why we did it that way...) The color-codes are the levels: red for foundation, blue for intermediate and green for proficiency. Unadapted novels are marked in white, in a separate section. On the shelves, the books are in baskets;
each basket with a letter or two for the title of the book. The reason for this is, when you come with a class, rather than having 30 kids crowd around the shelves, we take the baskets off the shelves, put them on tables and the kids can then walk around, picking from the baskets - it's much more convenient (they need to be reminded to return books they decide NOT to
take, to the appropriate basket.)

So- that's how WE do it - it works for us!

Adele
