This is what I do as well......But, I get PERMISSION to Xerox and distribute the pupils' comps. BEFORE I mark them and we read it together having them try to find the mistakes.( I also block out with tipex the names, as some pupils agree but want to remain anonymous. I stress getting permission because 25 yrs. ago, I had a pupil run out of the class crying even though I used many pupils' comps., all anonymous! Little by little the pupils DO improve; sometimes at a snail's pace, but who's counting KPH; the main thing is going in the right direction :)

Another idea someone on this forum kindly suggested to me earlier this year which works well, is dividing the class into pairs and having one write the opening sentence and first paragraph; the other pupil writes the completion and "in summary" sentence, and they must then work together to meld it into a decent piece of writing.

Thanks for the "After You My Dear Alphonse," as I am planning on teaching it and appreciate the ready quiz. I also adored the piece proving Barry wrong as to his birth date being a date when nothing of significance occurred.

Humor is therapeutic; in Japan I heard on the BBC some companies start the day with a tape by comedians to get belly-laughs, which causes the brain to secrete some chemical or another. Humor heals!! What with our "stupendous salaries;" having pupils from abused and/ or poverty stricken homes; surrounded by stress and violence, we can use all the humor we can get!
