I can't blame the curriculum for this one - the book is clearly
marked as being for "high school proficiency level students"
(taken from the back of the book). This was poor judgment
on the part of a teacher.
The problem of what to do with native speaker classes (which,
according to your description, this is NOT) is another problem,
which we have discussed often in the past on this list. Not an easy
call, but I find that it is always better to find authentic material from
the Internet or relevant book sellers (who are always most helpful)
than to use high school material that is geared towards older
pupils' intellectual levels and interests.

As I have mentioned before, I believe the lack of guidance in the new
curriculum is leading teachers to assign material that is not appropriate
to
the students' levels. this was the case in assigning this delightful
story
to a slightly above average 9th grade class.
