I am coming out of lurkdom to comment on the topic of suspension. Just last
week, a boy in the 6th grade ( kita vav) punched my son (who is in the 5th
grade), in the face, after tossing my son's bag back at him after having
grabbing it, emptying the contents onto the floor, and taunting him. This
child, who I assume is troubled and has problems, otherwise why would he be
misbehaving, has been bullying my son and many other kids since he came to
study in this school. When I spoke to the school counselor about the
incident, she assured me that it was being taken care of, and that he would
be , yet again, suspended. My first thought was exactly what Ruthi posted-
what a prize for him! I know for a fact that his mother doesn't stay home to
make sure he doesn't enjoy all the fun there.
Meanwhile my son is basically miserable, with us taking him to psychological
treatment to learn to deal with bullies and other situations in school.
I do believe that children do not misbehave for no reason, and that a
violent and disruptive child is a very unhappy child. In addition to being
bullied and being miserable in school, hating to go there every morning, a
bullied child will sometimes do things that belong in the category of
*misbehavior* in order to avoid confrontation.... *sigh*
I also remember a different kind of discipline growing up in New York in the
late sixties and early seventies. I remember study hall , after school
detention, extra work, etc. Of course I was an angel and never had to go
there, but it was implemented regularly in the school.
Hoping for a better week
All the best, Jennie

I have never understood the Israeli punishment of suspension.
In our schools in the UK, a punishment was detention (more school - ie stay
after everyone else has gone home and write a composition) ,not stay at
school and get up late, and watch TV all day- THAT's hardly a punishment!
Lots of teachers would be happy to be punished with a day off school.
