Subject: new blood in Irgun Hamorim
Hi All,
Our long and hard strike last year has paved the way for a new movement
and dynamic new blood in Irgun Hamorim, "Ruach Chadasha". Dudi Friedman is
at the helm with a circle of supporting teachers; he plans to run against
veteran Ran Erez in the union elections which are to take place in the
coming school year. There is a long process leading up to these elections.
Although I haven't yet met Dudi in person, I did have phone conversation
with him in the spring and was quite impressed by his seriousness and
motivation to bring about a needed change in the union's leadership. Since,
he's built a website where you can read about him and his plans. There's
also a detailed description of the election process; I learned quite a bit
in reading it. Do take the time to check it out. www.4morim.co.il You can
sign up for updates on the site. Our union ""va'ad" is presently working out
arrangements to have him come south and speak to us. He's already held
conventions in the center of the country.
Many of us went back to work after the strike feeling disillusioned by our
minimal gains and today, when we are still in the red and the Ministry
hasn't yet fulfilled its commitments to the teachers, maybe it's time to
work for change in the system. Many messages have come through on ETNI about
our extremely trying and difficult work situations as EFL teachers. The
modular Bagrut has left us drowning in work and without proper renumeration
for our extra-added load. We find ourselves asking time and time again, what
can we DO?
As you already know, I'm a firm union supporter. I think we should take our
grievances to the Irgun and now. I also think it's worthwhile considering
this new "party" within the Irgun. Many English teachers have said on the
list that we should start our own union; I'm not certain we have the numbers
to do that but perhaps we should have a lobby in the Irgun and in my
opinion, it's worthwhile seeing what Dudi Friedman has to offer.
Laurie
