Continuing the poetic mode....
On Valentine's Day, after opening the lesson with Burn's "A Red, Red, Rose",
I had my 11th grade native speaker class search the web for the "best" love
poem they could find. I was amazed to see what they chose; a good many were
true classics...Shakespeare, Tennyson, Spenser. Stephen Foster's "Beautiful
Dreamer" (which he set to music) also surfaced . After finding a poem, they
had to read and present it to the class, explaining their choice and looking
at the literary elements they found in the poem. In addition, they had to
write a short piece on the "above". The activity worked well and caught
their interest. This was a double-lesson for the Burn's introductory poem
and their Internet search. Some got a head start on their homework which was
to complete the assignment for the next lesson. The presentations took one
lesson.
I'll add here that we began the lesson with a short discussion about
Valentine's Day and the class had to find on the web at least 2 possible
origins of the day. Interesting.
