Subject: ld sanctions??
Dear Etniers:
Concerning the LD sanctions. I'm sure you all know that I am in favor of our
struggle for a fairer g'mul for projects, alternative assessment and the
extra work required for LD students. (Once again, English teachers are a
unique group - we're the only ones who have to prepare tapes for HaKraat
Sheilon). However, I have to admit that the thought of refusing to grant LD
students their hatamot is something that I would not want to do. I think
that sanctions must be done in a way that does not create inequality among
students (to the extent that that is possible), and it seems to me that by
carrying out sanctions that affect only LD students, we are doing just that.
Perhaps we can think of some alternative. For example, instead of granting
extra time, having the student answer a fewer questions or write a shorter
essay, and doing hakraat sheilon by a different method than an individual
tape. We still have some teachers who are keen to return strike hours, so
they can test students orally - they are actually thus getting paid to do
so.
I would not have a terrible problem of conscience by refusing to give 100%
of the hatamot on a regular basis to students in grades 7-10 as part of our
struggle- I think I could explain the issues and our struggle, and look for
some alternatives - such as giving the hatamot only on 1 exam in a semester
and giving that exam most of the weight in the final grade, or adding bonus
points to the test/semester grade to compensate the student for not having
been tested with the hatamot. I think we also might have to weigh things on
an individual basis. (for some students, hatamot are far more crucial than
for others).
I think we should ask the union to exempt students going to Bagrut from the
LD sanctions. I know that this will weaken our stand on this particular
issue, but there are so many issues on the table right now that I would much
prefer that the LD issue be negotiated without sanctions aimed against these
students.
I'm so swamped with work - if there is anyone who would be willing to
translate this letter to Hebrew and send it to me, I'd like to send it to
Irgun HaMorim.
