Subject: goal of English as a Second language in Israel
I would like to open up a discussion on this site on the following topic:
What is our goal as teachers of English as a Second/Foreign Language in
Israel? The Bagrut is over and we have time to clear our heads. I believe we
have a responsibility to our students to address this fundamental issue. We
should have a forum or panel on this at our summer convention.
Is our goal to teach for the bagrut so that students can pass a module?
Perhaps you think our goal should be to teach students to be able to
communicate effectively and proficiently in English? Should our students be
able to read and understand written texts for information purposes only or
is literature important as well? Should we emphasize verbal communication?.
What about English speakers who immigrate to Israel - should there be a
special program for them which encompasses the richness of the world they
come form or should they be ignored and lumped together with foreign
language students? What can be done to help these native speakers feel
English language instruction is important in Israel?
PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO MY EMAIL. THIS IS FOR DISCUSSION PURPOSES ONLY..
My intention is open a dialogue with fellow English teachers.
