Subject: employing the unemployed as teachers
We really do continue to let ourselves be treated like scum, don't we?
While I applaud the Ministry's awareness of the growing shortage of English
teachers, in my naivety I fondly imagined that I would go on pension in a
couple of years, and then be called back to active service in my wheelchair
or whatever at (finally) a decent salary. HA!
It doesn't really matter (no, I suppose it really does) whether the salary
mentioned in the English edition of Haaretz, or the one mentioned in the
Hebrew edition is the one that is being considered - they are both higher
than the starting salary of a properly trained English teacher, and if we're
talking about NIS9000, that's a lot more than a properly trained English
teacher gets with quite a few years of English teaching under his or her
belt.
With all due respect to the abilities of the high tech unemployed, what is
being offered here is the job of teaching English, not being the computer
technician at schools. Why will a mere 6 month training course qualify
these people to earn more than we do? I, as I'm sure many of you did as
well, read English as my major at University, then did a post-grad degree in
Education. Doesn't this count for something?
I really believe that we should take a stand on this. Let the government
finally understand that if teachers are paid a decent living wage, they will
automatically receive a higher status in our materialistic society, which
will translate into a more positive attitude to us on the part of the pupils
and their parents, and more good people will be attracted to the profession.
Because I still believe that teaching is a profession, and not some job
that needs only a short 6 month training course.
