Hi Batya - My grade 11 kids recently read the adapted version of "The 
Picture of Dorian Gray", which I had in the horizon textbook.  The pupils 
were asked to write an opinion essay on the following topic:
Do you think that a person who thinks only of himself enjoys life more than 
a person who helps others?  Why or why not?

I ended up with the most beautiful thoughtful honest essays - and no they 
didn't just write what I wanted to hear.  They gave examples, told stories, 
and wrote exactly how they feel.  You are absosultely right that teenagers 
are refreshingly frank, and usually write from the heart.  I save some of 
their essays to give back when they graduate - so they can look back on what 
they wrote.
