Subject: What level simplified readers should my students read?
Hi All,
Many teachers, when asked by pupils what level they are expected to read
answer with the famous "stage 4" answer. But did you know that Oxford
Storyland stage 4 has 300 keywords, Longman Structural stage 4 – 1100,
Longman Original stage 4 – 1200, Nelson Graded Readers stage 4 – 1500,
Penguin Readers stage 4 – 1600, Longman Classic Readers stage 4 has 1800
keywords, Cambridge English Readers Program stage 4 has 1800-2000 keywords
and the Oxford Progressive English Readers stage 4 has more than 3500
keywords! Did you notice? Oxford stage 4 can have 300 keywords (quite easy)
but also more than 3500 which is almost native speaker stuff. That is quite
a range! So what are you going to tell your students next time when they ask
you what level to read?
And what about the new ECB readers, called Grade 6, 7, 8, 9? Where do these
stand as compared to Longman, Heineman or Penguin? Answers to these
questions and more can be found on my site which I have finally updated with
the newer series. There might still be information missing but I am working
on that. If you have any questions please ask.
You can access the site at:

Just go to "Setting up an English Library"
All the best,
