Subject: The same word -- opposite meanings
Hi ETNI-ers:
A friend of mine, an ardent supporter of all things Armenian, has just
returned from her 15th visit to Armenia. In addition, she is now studying
the Armenian language. In particular, she was recently introduced to a new
word in Armenian which to her utter surprise has two distinctly different --
but opposite -- meanings. In response, I pointed out that even in English
there are such words: for example, the word "sanction". You can sanction an
action, meaning you permit it, and you can apply sanctions meaning that you
prevent it.
1. Can anyone suggest similar English words? 2. Is there a name for such
words? 3. Does Hebrew have such words?
