It's "THAT" time of year again, when "Shema" holds it annual meeting to explain all you need to know about Hearing Impaired students taking the Bagrut exam.

We'll also be talking about all those "holes" that make working with these kids somewhat tricky - "holes" in their general knowledge, "holes" in their L1. Here's an example from last week (hadn't come across this particular one before!):
the 12th grade 4 pointers had the word "benefit" in a question. I wrote the translation "TO-E-LET" (in Hebrew) on the board and some kids burst out laughing. it took me a moment to figure out what was so funny - they thought I meant toilet paper. they had never come across that Hebrew word.
And how about those who had never "heard" of Disney (Eurodisney is one word as far as those kids are concernced, they don't know euro is from Europe because in Hebrew its pronounced differently and they don't know Disney is a name)?
Whoa, I'm getting carried away...
