Subject: The Oral bagrut -another perspective
Dear List,
Despite the arguments for keeping the oral bagrut in some form - the
greatest of which is that if it is not tested, it is not taught, - I do
think that an enormous amount of time, energy and MONEY is spent on it,
which I don't really think is justified, when so many hours are being cut
from English.
As a private tutor, I have done very well by it. Scared pupils arrive in
droves to be coached specifically for this test - and I'm all for scaring
pupils; it means they are taking the exam seriously :). However, having put
in hours of work, both with me and at their schools, they then receive their
grades, and are delighted to discover - almost always -that their grades are
way up there in the high 80s and 90s, higher than their usual grades. The
effect of this is that they believe themselves to be much better than they
really are, and think that the written bagrut will also be a doddle. That's
it! No need to put in any more work on English!
Perhaps the solution to the problem would be to pay a group of testers who
would arrive at any given school from, say, 5th grade on up, giviing only a
week's prior notice, with a set of grade appropriate questions. I'm sure
the cost of such a team, though paid a monthly salary, would cost far less
and be far more effective than the haphzard method currently used.
