Subject: The F Literture Module

Dear Colleagues,

I have been reading everyone's comments about the F Literature Module with
great interest. I am in the pilot program this year. Because of the strike
we began the second semester of last year and will finish, Please G-d and
the forces that be at the Ministry, this January. I chose to do the LOG
(Talkat in Hebrew) because I wanted to be able to choose the literature I
felt appropriate for my students and that I enjoyed teaching.

True--I worked hard this year because I was learning a new approach--not
teaching material that I didn't know, but a different way of introducing
thinking skills, at the same time that I was doing the course. This year, I
am continuing with my now 12th graders and finishing the program while I am
beginning it with my 11th graders. I already see and feel the difference.
I'm more confident about how to introduce and teach the thinking skills
which in many cases I had been using. I just hadn't called them by name or
done various "bridging" activities with all the skills. Now I do. I've
absorbed the vocabulary of the program, learned how much I have to do, as I
was certainly over-teaching according to our counselor and the heads of the
program and gotten a class of 30 boys enjoying and studying Literature in an
intensive way. (BTW, you receive a full "gmul" for doing this excellent
course.)

I highly recommend this Module. Most of us, and I'm a "cockey optimist"
when I say most, have been teaching the Literature program with much success
and pleasure for many years. We have also been teaching more pieces of
Literature (The course requires fewer texts than we teach now.) and also
preparing our students for the F and G Modules. This requires a slightly
different approach, but not much more work than we were doing. Taking the
course together with teaching the program which was new and changing over
the months was what made it difficult. This year, after experience with us, lots of feedback, sample pages, unit planners, reflections, etc. the program
will be better defined and the teachers taking the course won't have to be
teaching the material at the same time.

I will be required to send in 3 logs to the Ministry as well as my own
material. I truly believe that teachers will do as asked and not try to get
around this. We are also checked by our counselors and visited by our
Inspectors. Please don't be so worried about this program. We are a great
group of teachers. In my opinion, the best group of subject teachers in the
country. Let's get into this and see how it goes.

Shana Tova to all and good luck to those taking the course.

Shelly Ganiel
