Subject: Teachers of English
Hi folks:
I am an Anglo-American currently living here in Israel. As
the author of many books on computers written in the USA,
I naturally have a great liking for the English language.
I was delighted to learn that a grandchild of ours was starting
to learn English at her Chabad school. She is 11 years old
and is particularly bright. Her knowledge of Hebrew is excellent
-- if only my ability in Hebrew was that good!
I was looking forward to helping her out with any problems
she might encounter in English but she has never approached
me for help. I was ready to give her 24-hour support.
When I approached her about her English studies she became
unusually silent. I tried to explain to her that the English language
is increasingly becoming more important to know than ever.
She then turned to me and, with anger in her voice,
said: aich zeh ya-a-zor lee? (How will that help me?)
Does anyone have any ideas how to turn her attitude around?
Henry Mullish
