Subject: Sour Gripes
Dear Colleagues,
We are in the midst of the job hunting season ( I wonder how many jobs can
you shoot if you get a license?)
And so ETNI receives a number of postings that begin thus:
Dear xxxxx
I am interested in making aliyah and securing a position in an EFL
department at a college or university,
I am quite teed off by these and would like to explain why.
In '82 i had nearly completed an MA in Eng Lit, and moved to Kiriat
Shmona.
I ended up teaching in the local junior hi/high school, which, as we all
know is a mixed bag of delights. I was busy for many years raising a
bunch of kids in the Kiriat Shmona reality with all the trimmings,
interspersed with occasional months of Miluim. Only recently, almost 30
years later, have I managed to land a number of part time jobs at various
institutions of higher learning, where I can rake in the appropriate
salary and prestige.
So, when these American academic teachers come on Aliah, and land a job in
some academic institute, they are effectively blocking some poor jerk like
me who is trying to move ahead.
If they were really patriotic, they'd put some time into a high shcool
first.
I happen to know of a vacancy or two in the north.
Snarl, snarl, snarl,
Barry
