Subject: Response to hakbatzot issues
Tova, I'm glad you signed your name! I always sign mine even when I know I'm
writing something controversial or unpopular. you wrote: "Why do the new
teachers at a school get palmed off with a Hakbsa C class, You will hardly
ever see a veteran teacher get this group of children?"
In our Ulpana, even our superb Rakezet has one of the weakest Hakbatzot.
EVERY Eng. teacher on our staff has a mixture of groups-- nobody gets all
the weak/ strong groups. For years until my retirement I was given the
weakest 11th/ 12th grade classes for bagrut and I'm neither a newbie nor a
lousy teacher. We all get a mixture from the top to the bottom. My principal
is a mensch, and even when we hired a young (fantastic) new EFL teacher 2
years ago, he gave her one hakbatza Alef claiming that she should have one
excellent group to get satisfaction from! (She had been my student teacher
for a year so he knew she was more than competent.) This is the way it
SHOULD be! Weak classes need excellent teachers, not poor nor inexperienced
ones! And no single teacher should be saddled with all the difficult
classes.
Louise wrote, "I have to almost get on my knees to get approval for a
student to move from 5 to 4 points because her average is 20%." We had a
class with 6-7 pupils whose parents refused to have them moved down to a
lower group about 15 years ago. My principal and I sent a joint letter to
parents with a copy in the "tik ishi" saying that the school will hence
refuse to take any responsibilty regarding their child's expected failure of
the Eng. Bagrut since their daughter is not in the group suited to her
abilities. When a year later parents of one girl came to complain that she
did indeed fail, my principal took out the letter from her tik and boy did
that end the argument quickly!
Shavua Tov to all-
