I used the Accelrated Reading Program when I taught ESL elementary
students in America, and it was fantastic. The books are coded with
a red, blue, yellow, or green dot. The kids take a pre-test to find out
their level and then check out books with their color dot. When they
finish the book (I required that they read it twice, once alone and once
with a friend) they take the multiple choice test. If they scored a 4 or 5
I gave them points towards a prize. After a few months, I tested them
again and they had all improved their levels. You can print out the test
results, and it's a great way way to show class improvement.

This is a geat idea. I don't think we could apply it exactly in the same
way here with English being a foreign language. I wonder how we could get
our hands on their multiple choice tests? Or at least see how that's
done? Any ideas?

The secret's out -- reading is fun
The Daily Courier - November 9, 2006
Students at Connellsville Junior High West have discovered a secret that
is spreading throughout the school -- reading is fun. Making its debut at
the school is the accelerated reader program that is helping to encourage
students to read.
With a point-awarding system, students find themselves not only reading
more, but reading books that are more difficult, says the school's
librarian.
"I am very pleased with the overall response from teachers and the
students to the program," said librarian Chris Wallander. "I think that
for some of the students, they are realizing for the first time that they
like to read."
