1) You mention Shlomit Amichai -- whom I personally believe to be a
serious, honest professional, also shrugged off the Ministry's
"responsibilty" in this specific incident since it involved a parent and
not the pupils.
Yes, our mandate is to educate the kids, not the parents, but AS EDUCATORS
we should also set the "red line" . Violence against civil servants
because of their job-- or medical personnel -- actually against anyone! --
should be severely punished . Otherwise, trly society will behave as MIGHT
MAKES RIGHT.
If Amihai e had been attacked by a parent -- as a repepresentative of
the Ministry -- would she not see it as the Ministry's responsibility ?
2) As English teachers we should be VERY AWARE of the new Lit module ---
specifically the Reading Log -- . We are expected to give the FINAL
BAGRUT EXAM GRADE, not just a "school grade = 50% vs the external tester.
In addition to saving the Ministry lots and lots and lots of money at our
time and expense, we are setting ourselves up for confrontations with
parents.
Two years ago, I was threatened in the teachers' room by parents who felt
that their darling's F module grade was too low (they were happy with the
G). And the threat came AFTER I HAD ALREADY TOLD the little dear, that I
would certainly check the grade and my arithmetic again and give a reply
the following day. I had not even "stuck to my guns" yet -- because the
kid asked that I recheck -- perfectly reasonable and of course I would.
Ten minutes after that, the parents appeared.
So while we create & implement these lessons against violence (there are
many already available), we should also be aware of what we are getting
ourselves into.
